Geriatric Fellowship
The Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program at Centra is committed to provide excellence in training and patient care. This fellowship is designed to immerse the fellow in didactics, self-study, and clinical experiences that will build a core of skills in the discipline of caring for the elderly. Fellows are given preparatory instruction for careers in clinical medicine or academics/administration. A supervised project of scientific inquiry is required. The fellowship is a one year program of intensive study and clinical experiences leading to eligibility to sit for the ABIM/ABFM CAQ in Geriatrics.
FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
- Collaboration with Lynchburg College gerontology program (Beard Center for Aging).
- Interdisciplinary team care in various settings.
- Special training in the Program of All-encompassing Care for the Elderly (PACE).
- Block rotations in Geropsychiatry, Stroke Care, Wound Care and Rehabilitation.
- Attending regional and national meetings of the AGS and VaGS.
- Office and hospital-based geriatric team assessments.
- Developing teaching and administrative academic skills.
This new program has been recognized by the RC-FM of the ACGME as an accredited training program in the discipline of geriatric medicine.

The fellowship is open to physicians who have completed an ACGME 3-year accredited residency in family or internal medicine. The candidate must be able to qualify for unrestricted licenses in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Two current letters of reference and a residency director recommendation letter must be submitted. The candidate will be board-certified or board-eligible in his/her specialty. If the physician has prior clinical experience this will be factored in with your financial compensation this includes: Health, Dental, and Life insurance.

Benefits:
Annual Salary of: $54,250, payable monthly.
Meals: Each hospital cafeteria provides meals (free of charge) to the fellows on duty in the hospital. Food is available free of charge in the doctor's lounges at VBH/LGH when the cafeteria is closed. Each fellow will be provided a monthly meal card with a specified amount allowed each month. Utilization of the card is for the fellow only and if charges exceed the monthly amount allowed, they will be billed to the fellow through payroll deduction.
Insurances:
1. Health: Piedmont Community Health Plan is provided for the fellow by Centra. A fellow's spouse and children may be covered under the Group Insurance family plan at an additional cost.
2. Malpractice: Malpractice Insurance is provided to the fellow at no cost through Centra. This includes the tail coverage policy after graduation. However, this does NOT cover moonlighting.
3. Life: Life insurance coverage is provided to the fellow through Centra.
4. Disability: Disability Insurance is provided through Centra.

The requirements for application to the Lynchburg Family Medicine Geriatric Fellowship is:

U.S. Citizen of Permanent Resident No visas sponsored.

Graduation from an accredited medical school within the last 3 years or clinical experience in the US since graduation.

Successful completion of CSA by June 1 of PGY3 year.

IMGs - Valid ECFMG (if applicable) or valid U.S. License.

2 current reference letters within the last 12 months.

Applications accepted through ERAS only.

Good oral and written communication skills.

Deadline for applying: December 31st.

Must come to a face-to-face interview.

Our Current Geriatric Fellowship Resident:
Dr. Lisa Larkin MD
Dr. Lisa M. Larkin originates from Lynchburg, Virginia; she earned her medical degree from American University of the Caribbean in 2006. Dr. Larkin completed her three year residency at Lynchburg Family Medicine in 2010. Dr. Larkin is currently the new Geriatric Fellowship intern for the 2010 calendar year.
Interest includes: Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Mountain Biking, and Skiing.
